2019 Wellesley in Chicago Annual Meeting/Luncheon Featuring Raymond Starr (Classical Studies) and Wellesley Trivia - RSVP DEADLINE EXTENDED UNTIL MAY 7

ray-starrThe Chicago Wellesley Club is excited to welcome acclaimed Professor Raymond Starr to the club's annual meeting and luncheon! Professor Starr will speak on Ancient Roman Fathers and Daughters: Law, Society, and the Emperor Augustus. The event will also feature Wellesley trivia.

Roman law gave fathers enormous power over their daughters and sons, no matter how old the children were. The father owned everything his children acquired (imagine having your paycheck automatically deposited in your father's bank account, whether you were fifteen or fifty); he could both arrange and dissolve their marriages, and in theory he could even execute them. Professor Starr will explore how law affected Roman families both in theory and in practice and then turn to Augustus, the first Roman Emperor, who presented himself as the father of the entire Roman people.
